Classic Rice Krispies Marshmallow Treats

Melted marshmallows and butter coat every piece of crispy rice cereal in these soft, chewy squares. A gentle press into the pan keeps the treats light enough to pull apart with that familiar gooey stretch.

Plate piled with soft marshmallow crispy rice treats beside a vintage Kellogg’s Rice Krispies cereal box in a warm 1970s-style kitchen setting.

Ingredients

  • ¼ cup butter
  • 10 oz marshmallows — about 40 regular marshmallows or 5½ cups miniature marshmallows
  • 5 cups crispy rice cereal

Optional Additions

  • Chocolate drizzle (optional)
  • Caramel drizzle (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Pan: Grease a 13x9-inch pan with butter or nonstick spray.
  2. Melt the Butter: In a large saucepan over low heat, melt butter completely.¼ cup butter
  3. Melt the Marshmallows: Add marshmallows and stir constantly over low heat until completely melted and smooth, 3 to 5 minutes. Do not let the mixture boil or brown. Remove the saucepan from the heat as soon as no visible lumps remain.10 oz marshmallows
  4. Add the Cereal: Immediately fold in crispy rice cereal until every piece is evenly coated.5 cups crispy rice cereal
  5. Press into the Pan: Transfer mixture into the prepared pan. Use a lightly buttered spatula or sheet of wax paper to gently spread and press it into an even layer without compacting too firmly. The mixture will be hot and sticky.
  6. Cool: Let cool at room temperature for about 40 minutes, or until set but still soft. Cut into 24 small squares.

Notes

  • Heat: Keep the saucepan over low heat and remove it as soon as the marshmallows are smooth. Prolonged cooking or excessive heat can make the treats firm.
  • Texture: Press the mixture gently into the pan instead of packing it tightly.
  • Marshmallows: Fresh marshmallows give the treats the softest texture and best stretch.
  • Serving Suggestions: Best served the same day with Citrus Slush Punch or Sunshine Punch. If needed, make them 1 day ahead and store airtight at room temperature for up to 2 days; for the best texture, do not refrigerate.
  • Optional Additions
  • Chocolate drizzle
  • Caramel drizzle
  • Sprinkles
