Egg in a Hole Toast
An egg cooks in the center of buttery griddled bread, with crisp edges and a soft yolk to dip into. Toast the little bread cutout alongside it so no part of this simple breakfast goes to waste.

- Add the Eggs: Crack one egg into the hole of each slice of bread. Season lightly with kosher salt and black pepper.4 eggs, kosher salt, black pepper
- Cook the First Side: Cook for 2–3 minutes, until the egg whites begin to turn opaque. If needed, gently poke the thicker parts of the whites so they settle into the bread and cook evenly.egg-filled toast
- Flip and Finish: Slide a spatula under each slice of bread and carefully flip the toast and egg together. Cook for 30–60 seconds more for a soft yolk, or longer if you prefer a firmer egg. Flip the cutout rounds as well, cooking until golden on both sides.egg in a hole toast, bread rounds
Notes
- Bread Choice: Whole wheat, sourdough, brioche, Texas toast, or thick-cut sandwich bread all work. Slightly thicker bread gives the egg more structure.
- Hole Size: A 3-inch cutter gives the egg enough room to cook without overflowing.
- Heat Level: Medium heat is best. Too hot and the bread browns before the egg sets; too low and the bread dries out.
- Yolk Texture: For runny yolks, flip carefully and cook the second side briefly. For firmer yolks, cook an extra minute after flipping.
- Cutout Rounds: Do not throw away the bread rounds. They toast into little buttery dippers for the yolk.
- Serving Suggestions: Serve with Crispy Roasted Potatoes, Fruit Salad, bacon, breakfast sausage, avocado, or a simple green salad.
