Cut the Bread:
Cut a round hole from the center of each slice of bread.

An egg cooks in the center of buttery griddled bread, with crisp edges and a soft yolk to dip into. Toast the little bread cutout alongside it so no part of this simple breakfast goes to waste.
This is one of those breakfasts that proves you do not need much to make something good. Bread, butter, eggs, salt, and pepper — that is really the whole thing. The trick is getting the bread golden and crisp while keeping the yolk soft enough to run into the toast. Call it egg in a hole, egg in a basket, or toad in the hole toast — either way, it is breakfast doing exactly what it is supposed to do.

Cut a round hole from the center of each slice of bread.

Butter both sides of the bread and the cutout rounds.

Griddle the bread until golden on the bottom.

Crack one egg into each hole and season with salt and pepper.

Carefully turn the toast and egg together until the whites are set and the yolks stay soft.
Plate each toast with its crisp cutout round on the side.
